April 10 2009 Good Friday Tornado
On Friday April 10th 2009 a tornado classified by the National Weather Service as ranging up to an EF4 with winds up to 200 miles per hour ripped a 23 mile path of destruction across Rutherford County. Damage was surveyed from Rockvale to Lascassas with the heaviest devistation occuring in the city of Murfreesboro. Approximately 50 people were treated at local hospitals. Initially 7 of those were in critical condition. There were two fatalities. Crews are continuing to remove debris as soon as possible. Debris will be collected by type. Please insure you seperate your debris by catagories of: #1 Natural Waste: Trees, limbs, stumps ect. #2: Sturctural Debris: Anything man-made.
845 structures have been surveyed with damage. Out of those 298 have major damage and with 117 are completely destroyed. Damage estimates total $41.8 million dollars.
Rutherford County EMA would like to remind homeowners that reputable contractors will not ask for money before work is done. There have been reports of possible scams taking place in the affected areas.
