The Rutherford County Emergency Management and Special Operations Response Team will be conducting a 24 hour Ground Search and Rescue Operations – Basic Awareness training course PROJECTED IN 2009
Prerequisite training required for this class is the completion of IS 100, IS 200, IS 700 IS 800 or 800b OR 16 hr NIMS-Incident Command.
The overall objective of this training is to provide students with a general knowledge and understanding of tactical functions involved in ground search operations including familiarization of land navigation using a map and compass, and tracking skills. Targeted groups are any response discipline which may have the potential to become involved in searching for missing or lost persons.
The course will consist of classroom activity, outdoor grid searching and visual tacking exercises and land navigation exercises in Cedars of Lebanon State Forest. Class activity will take place at the Rutherford County SORT facility at 585 Fortress Blvd, Murfreesboro, TN.
** Students must be aware that travel is required to the alternate training sites. Students will be required to make carpool arrangements on day one in an effort to reduce traffic congestion on forest roads.
For Field work students will need the following material:
Walking stick 4 to 5 feet in height. (You may make your own or purchase one at an outdoor store.), Small back pack or fanny pack, water container, boots, writing pad and pen/pencil, clothing fit for the environment, food, Bug Spray, Safety glasses are recommended. Using your own compass is recommended. * Only base plate or woodsman style mapping compasses are allowed however, compasses will be supplied for students for class work. **GPS navigation is NOT utilized in this training.
* Because this is an outdoor activity conducted in various densities of terrain, all students must be in good physical condition.
Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are available from MTSU on this training.
