Neighboring Counties Host Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Locations, Dates and Times PDF

Now’s the time to dispose of leftover hazardous waste materials. It’s FREE, but for residential waste only.

Although Rutherford County will not receive a Household Hazardous Waste Collection (HHW) from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) during the spring of 2013, neighboring counties will host collections. Citizens are encouraged to take advantage of these events to properly dispose of unwanted hazardous materials. Many of the items targeted for collection are flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic and should not be thrown in the garbage.

The collection will accept:
• Household cleaners- drain openers, oven cleaners, wood and metal cleaners and polishes, toilet bowl cleaners, disinfectants
• Home maintenance products- paint thinner, stripper, adhesives and other home improvement products
• Lawn and garden products- herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers
• Automotive products- oil and fuel additives, grease and rust solvents, air condition refrigerants, starter fluids, cleaners
• Miscellaneous items such as pool chemicals, aerosols, photo processing chemicals, spray paint, mercury thermostats and thermometers, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent blubs

The collection will not accept:
• Paint is NO LONGER accepted at TDEC collections. Click here for directions on solidifying latex paint, or the proper disposal of oil-based paint. You may also call (615) 542-4633 for a flyer to be mailed.
• Medical wastes, radioactive wastes, vegetable oil, explosives, and wastes from businesses, schools, farms or churches
• Large home appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, etc.

– Remember to keep waste in original containers and do not mix chemicals.

ELECTRONIC WASTE should be diverted from this collection and is accepted every Tuesday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 1140 Haley Road in Murfreesboro. Please call (615) 898-7739 for further details about electronic waste.

This is a great opportunity to safeguard your home from potentially dangerous chemicals. It is hoped that Rutherford County will receive an HHW collection from TDEC in November 2013, but please refer to at a later date for more local information.
