Fire hydrants are tested annually to improve water supply and keep track of changes in water systems. The tops of the hydrants (called bonnets) are color coded to inform firefighters of the available water flow from each hydrant. The standards set by the American Water Works Association and National Fire Protection have the following categories:

Blue +1,500 gallons per minute  
Green 1,000-1,499 gallons per minute  
Orange 500-999 gallons per minute  
Red 499 gallons per minute  
Black Out of service  


It is very important for firefighters to be able to find and access fire hydrants quickly in case of emergencies. Property owners should avoid obstruction of hydrant visibility or usage.
