History

The Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center was established in November of 1993. Rutherford County opened its own juvenile facility when finding open juvenile detention beds in Middle Tennessee became near impossible. We opened this first Juvenile Detention Center in a building that was once the old adult jail. This building was located at 400 West Main Street. Initially the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center was a 14-bed facility. Eventually the facility expanded to 46 beds.

Establishing a Juvenile Detention Center in Murfreesboro accomplished several things:

1. The Rutherford County Youth Services Office was able to discontinue their procedure of going out on calls after hours for arrested juveniles.

2. Area law enforcement officers can return to active service more rapidly after placing a juvenile under arrest.

3. Juveniles arrested on serious charges, that are a threat to themselves or the community will be detained.
