Cold Case Detective–Sgt. Dan Goodwin
Goodwin started at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in August 1992. The next year he became one of the first five School Resource Officers in Tennessee. In 1995 he transferred to the Detective Division, serving seven years in Narcotics and more than eight years in CID. He and Lt. Bill Sharp were named 2002 Officers of the Year for solving the 1984 murder of MTSU student Laura Salmon.
Goodwin is certified to teach all law enforcement weapons systems except precision rifle and has published scores of articles on firearms and training issues in national publications. He is a court-certified firearms expert in Tennessee’s 16th Judicial District.
Goodwin also teaches cold case investigations, search warrant writing, narcotics identification and investigation, and media issues to law enforcement in-service classes and civilian audiences, assists in firearms training and acquisition.
Before joining RCSO, he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Mass Communications from Middle Tennessee State University in 1985, and taught journalism there for several years while working as a newspaper reporter and editor. Goodwin is an Air Force veteran of the SR-71 Blackbird and U-2 Dragonlady spy plane programs.
Goodwin has coached trapshooting teams for Riverdale High School and Christiana Middle School, and enjoys shooting, hunting and writing/photography in his “spare time.”
