After receiving his degree from MTSU as a certified teacher and having the privilege of playing football under the great "Boots" Donnelly, Major Kennedy started his career under another great leader, Sheriff Truman Jones, joining the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office on October 1, 1991. Serving as a Patrol Officer for approximately two years, Major Kennedy transferred to the SRO pilot program initiated by Sheriff Truman Jones. At that time Officer Kennedy was assigned to Oakland High School for several years and was very instrumental in the growth of the SRO program. Officer Kennedy moved through the ranks to Sergeant then in 1998 was promoted to Captain and Division Commander and in 2002 to Major. In addition to the responsibilities of the SRO program, Major Kennedy is responsible for the Wellness and Fitness Program. Over the years, Major Kennedy has been a tremendous resource in the development of numerous programs. He is especially proud of his development of a program for at-risk-youth called Y-SAFE (YMCA-Sheriff's Athletic Fellowship & Enrichment). In 1994, Major Kennedy received a Presidential Citation from the National School Resource Officer (NASRO) organization and in 1996, Major Kennedy was awarded "Officer of the Year" from the RCSO.
